Dewey Follett Bartlett, Republican. Served from 1967 to 1971. The second Republican Governor of the State of Oklahoma, Bartlett was born in Mariett, Ohio, March 28, 1919. He attended Princeton University where he was granted a B.S.E. degree in Geological Engineering. Bartlett served in the Marine Corps during World War II as a combat dive bomber pilot. He received the Air Medal. He was a partner in Keener Oil Company, one of Oklahoma's oldest, small independent oil companies. He was first elected to the State Senate in 1962 and was re-elected in 1964. He served as Governor from January 9, 1967, to Januray 11, 1971, and was elected to the U.S. Senate November 7, 1972. He died March 1, 1979, and is buried in Tulsa.The Governor of Oklahoma is the chief executive officer of the state and is elected for a four year term. Principal powers and responsibilities are outlined by the state constitution and by statute and include certain appointive powers, the veto or approval of bills passed by the Legislature, the granting of pardons and paroles, the summoning of special sessions of the legislature, and the calling out of the militia. Moreover, the Governor is directly responsible for the preparation of the state budget, serves as an ex officio member of several boards and commissions, receives reports from various state officers and agencies, and is charged with the duty of seeing that all laws are faithfully executed in the state.
