3 General Manager’s Report - 2012 Strategic Directions In The U.S. Electric Utility Industry 4 Board Report - July 12, 2012 5 From the Board Chair - Seven Hats And Other Awards 6 Legislative Update: 2nd Session Of Oklahoma’ s 53rd Legislature 10 Lineman’s Corner - Pole Inspections AUGUST 2012 VOL. 28 NO. 8 participating cities. These members serve staggered three-year terms with one third coming up for election each year. Charles Lamb (Chair), Homer Nicholson, Walter Allen and John Ramey, whose terms expire in September 2012, have all indicated a willingness to continue serving on the board. Elizabeth Gray, who replaced Dan Scott as the elector from Altus, has agreed to serve the remainder of Scott’s term on the board which will expire in September 2013. Those attending the meeting also will hear reports from Board Chair Charles Lamb and General Manager Cindy L. Holman. Lamb will discuss OMPA governance and board accomplishments during the past year. Holman’s remarks will center on services to the member cities, the status of current generation projects and future power supply needs. More information on the election of board members will be in the September Outlet. Mark you calendars to attend the annual electors’ meeting on September 13th. The 2012 Annual Electors’ meeting will be held on Thursday, September 13th at 1 pm at the Roland H. Dawson OMPA Headquarters Building, 2701 West I-35 Frontage Road, in Edmond. The theme this year is Powering Forward and relates to ongoing generation projects, including AEP’s Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) baseload power plant, the John W. Turk Jr. Power Plant, in Hempstead County, Arkansas and the Canadian Hills Wind Farm near El Reno, Oklahoma. OMPA’s annual meeting will honor Shane Woolbright, MESO Executive Director, who will be retiring this year after 30 years of service to MESO and Public Power in Oklahoma. MESO was formed in 1971 and hired full time staff in 1978. Woolbright is the third director of the organization following Mike McDowell and Chuck Smith. The focus of the annual meeting will be the election of the board of directors’ members. The board consists of an 11-member board elected by representatives (electors) of the OMPA’s new generating plant named “Charles D. Lamb Energy Center” development of the Authority’s Competitive Utility Program (CUP). CUP, started in 1995, is a voluntary program that provides OMPA members with a way to evaluate and improve the operation of their electric utilities, and make them better able to compete in the electric utility industry. In addition, he instituted the use and evolution of an OMPA Board self evaluation to improve board governance and continues to be a major supporter of the development and use of a strategic plan for OMPA. He also serves on the APPA Policy Makers Committee. The OMPA Board of Directors approved designating the name of the new generating plant to be built near Ponca City as the “Charles D. Lamb Energy Center” in honor of OMPA’s Board Chair and Edmond Mayor during its monthly business meeting on July 12th. Preliminary plans are underway on a site for the natural gas combustion turbine facility that will be built near Ponca City. The new plant is scheduled for operation in 2015. Mayor Lamb has served on the OMPA Board since 1993. Since 2001, he has served as the Board Chair and he is the longest tenured elected official to serve as the chair.
