Purpose	Research reported upon at the symposium focused on geology, depositional settings, reservoir characterization, diagenetic history, enhanced oil recovery, and horizontal drilling. In describing the various petroleum reservoirs in the Simpson and Viola Groups in the southern Midcontinent, the researchers have increased our understanding of how the depositional and diagenetic history of these strata can affect reservoir heterogeneity and our ability to efficiently recover the hydrocarbons they contain. We hope that the symposium and these proceedings will bring such research to the attention of the geoscience and energy-research community, and will help foster exchange of information and increased research interest among industry, university, and government workers.
