APRIL IS AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH
Oklahoma Autism Piece Walk and 5K Run
The Oklahoma Family Center for Autism is hosting the Annual Piece Walk and 5K Run on May 1st at the
Bricktown Ball Park in Oklahoma City. This family-friendly event includes a one-mile fun walk, a sanctioned
5K run, a resource fair, food, entertainment and children’s activities. Registration for the run is $25; the

Sensory Friendly Films
Many local theaters now offer families the chance to enjoy first run movies in a safe and accepting environ-ment
that accommodates the sensory needs of their children. At monthly showings, these movie theaters
have the lights brought up and the sound turned down. They do not show previews or advertisements. In
addition, families can bring their own snacks and audience members are welcome to get up, dance, walk

Joni Bruce Accepted to Leadership Institute
Joni Bruce, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Family Network, has received national recognition as one
of only 25 people accepted to the Fellows in the Maternal and Child Health-Public Health Leadership Insti-tute
(MCH-PHLI). The MCH-PHLI identifies outstanding individuals in the Maternal and Child Health field
and provides them with intensive leadership training. Congratulations, Joni!
Assistance and Support for Military Families with Special Needs
Military OneSource and the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) are available to provide informa-tion
and support to military families with special needs. Military OneSource provides information about fam-ily
support, early intervention, healthcare, post-secondary education, housing, moving, and support for
adults. Service members who live on or near a military installation, can contact the Exceptional Family
Member Program. EFMP staff are trained to help families navigate the maize of service systems. To locate

who do not live near an installation can contact a consultant at Military OneSource for support and assis-tance.

2010 Edition of Social Security’s Red Book (January 2010)
The Red Book is a general reference source on the employment-related provisions of the Social Security
Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs, including a general de-scription
of disability-related policies. It is primarily for educators, advocates, rehabilitation professionals
and counselors who serve people with disabilities, but it can also serve as a self-help guide for Social Se-curity
