Thriving Marriages (TM) is excited to offer several new retreats this year! Due to requests from parents, Thriving Marriages has added a retreat for Couples Caring for a Child with Down Syndrome on January 19-20, 2013. This will be the first time a TM retreat has been offered for this group, and the retreat team is working hard to prepare for the weekend. Couples will learn communications skills using the PREP curriculum, have a Q&A time with service providers, and OKDHS Practice & Policy Lecture Series: Does Marriage Education Work? December 10 – Noon to 1 p.m. – Oklahoma History Center 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive, Oklahoma City Most of what goes wrong in our significant relationships has to do with never having learned the skills and principles associated with successful relationships. When our relationships are healthy, we are more productive, more satisfied in all areas of life. The curricula of PREP present the skills and strategies that are critical in sustaining those healthy relationships. Dr. Stanley will discuss the research evidence for PREP. Dr. Scott Stanley is a research professor and co-director of the Center for Marital and Family Studies at the University of Denver. He has published widely with research interests including commitment, communication, conflict, confidence, risk factors for divorce, prevention of marital distress and couple development. Along with Dr. Howard Markman and colleagues, he has been involved in the research, development and refinement of the Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP) for more than 30 years. Stanley is also a co-author of “Within Our Reach,” an experiential-based curriculum for couples and “Within My Reach,” an experiential-based curriculum for individuals. His professional experience includes serving as the senior advisor to the Oklahoma Marriage Initiative since 2000.
