Last month was Child Abuse Prevention Month and Oklahoma hosts many activities across the state in support of child abuse prevention and to raise awareness. One of the largest events is Child Abuse Prevention Day at the Capitol. This year’s theme was “Be a Lifesaver, Prevent Child Abuse”. Events included Build a Blue Ribbon Tree, a Diaper Drive, a Press Conference held by OICA, Child Abuse Prevention award ceremony, Child Abuse Reporting classes, Advocacy 101 training with OICA, and performances by the Linwood Elementary Children’s Choir and the Britton Elementary 5th Grade Ballroom Dancers. Be sure to mark your calendars for next year’s Child Abuse Prevention Day at the Capitol – Tuesday April 9, 2013. Kirkpatrick Grant Awarded Smart Start Oklahoma has recently been awarded a grant from the Kirkpatrick Foundation to incorporate early literacy into the home visitation program, Children First (C1). Named “Reading Begins at Home”, this project will use funds to provide C1 nurses with early literacy information to families during their home visits. Smart Start Oklahoma is excited to be partnering with the Oklahoma State Department of Health to make this project a success. Kay County, Garfield, County, and Muskogee County. Upcoming Conferences and Presentations Debra Andersen, Executive Director, and Pat Potts, from the Potts Family Foundation, will be presenting at Smart Start North Carolina. They will provide an overview of Oklahoma’s Champions for Early Opportunities (OK-CEO) program which encourages business leaders to invest in early childhood. Debra Andersen has also been invited to present at the National Governor’s Association meeting in Washington D.C. to discuss the challenges of building a state longitudinal data system. Recap: Child Abuse Prevention Day ACF Grant Released The Administration for Children and Families is soliciting applications for proposed projects to address the early educational needs of young children who are in or are at-risk of entering into foster care. Applications are due June 11, 2012.
