It’s also tough for the crews to work on them when it is below freezing and the wind comes sweeping down the plain. While shipping totals at the Port were lower than average in December because of problems with persistent drought and low water conditions on inland river systems nationwide, the annual totals for 2012 for cargo through the Port still reached record levels, an achievement already known by the end of November. T otal shipping for the month of December was 147,536 tons. Barge traffic was slowed considerably throughout November and December on the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System because of dredging, lock closures, and other issues mostly related to dry weather conditions, primarily those affecting Mississippi River flows.
