Unless noted, all estimates are at the state level. 1 State, district and county level estimates for 2010 crop year. 2 Estimates made by variety for state and districts. Winter Wheat: Acreage, Yield, Production, Price and Value, Oklahoma, 2007-2011 and Historic The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service program for wheat includes a number of estimates that are made on a schedule spanning the entire crop year. The inclusion of any state in the na-tional program is dependent on that state’s portion of the national wheat crop. The survey data used to estimate wheat come from series of Quarterly Ag and the Small Grains County Agricul-tural Production (CAPS) surveys. In December, produc-ers are asked about wheat seeded acres for the upcom-ing crop year. In March and June, producers are asked what they actually planted and how many acres they expect to harvest. In September for both the quarterly and CAPS surveys, producers are asked about their final acreage and yield for the crop year. These data are used for the final acreage and production estimates and also set the county acreages and production across the state. Monthly yield per acre estimates are based on both data reported by producers (Agricultural Yield survey), as well as data collected from field observations (Wheat Objective Yield survey). Both surveys are conducted from May through August and provide monthly assess-ments on the production potential of the crop. The Wheat Objective Yield survey collects field observations by laying out small plots in approximately 180 ran-domly selected fields across the state. Counts are made and clippings are taken for analysis through harvest. Gross yield per acre and post harvest loss are combined to determine an indication of net yield per acre. WELCOME to the second issue of the Annual Wheat Review! Thank you to all the participants from the wheat industry for their continued support and coop-eration- especially the producers who provide data on the Quarterly Ag, Monthly Ag Yield, and Small Grain County Agricultural Production surveys. Without your commitment and participation, this report would not be available. This publication is a compilation of related reports issued by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) in an effort to provide a complete source of statistics relevant to the wheat industry. Though many of the statistics in this publication can be accessed through our website, www.nass.usda.gov/ Publications, this Oklahoma Field Office summary will be issued annually in September. Using the results of this survey, wheat seeded acreages are derived for each district across the state. In conjunction with the annual Small Grains County Agricultural Production survey conducted in the late fall, data is also collected for the annual Wheat Variety survey, which publish approximately 40 different varieties planted by producers across the state. Endurance remained the number one wheat variety in Oklahoma for the second year. Winter wheat crop progress and conditions are published on a weekly basis beginning in September with planting through the first week of December, concluding when most of the crop has emerged. Crop progress is then reconvened in March when the crop begins to head, and con-tinues through the harvest season. The reports are a balance sheet estimating supply (beginning stocks, imports and production) and demand (domestic use, ex-ports and ending stocks). Forecast season-average farm prices tie together both sides of the balance sheet. The projected U.S. wheat ending stocks for 2011/12 were raised 90 million bushels for September as higher imports and lower food use and ex-ports are expected. The season average farm price for wheat is projected at $7.35 to $8.35 per bushel, which is supported by the higher corn prices. ENDING STOCKS VOLUME 2, ISSUE 1 PAGE 3 Prices received by producers are monthly average price estimates based on data collected from grain elevators across the state and are published in our monthly USDA-NASS Agricultural Prices report. The average price for wheat in Okla-homa for August 2011 was $7.78 per bushel, up $1.94 per bushel from a year ago. The preliminary price for September was set at $7.43 per bushel. Oklahoma’s marketing year for winter wheat runs from June-May. Marketing percents by month and market year aver-age price (MYA) are calculated annually and released at the end of August.
