Volume 36, Number 8 Weekly Summary for Apr 1-Apr 7 Issued April 8, 2013 Beneficial Rainfall Received Multiple days of rain resulted in big precipitation totals for central and southeastern Oklahoma, as high as 4.76 inches at Talihina. The state averaged 1.44 inches for the week, and every Mesonet station recorded some precipitation. Far western Oklahoma received a half inch or less and many locations in the Panhandle recorded less than a tenth of an inch for the week. This rain event followed the rain from Easter weekend, allowing for improvement to stock ponds from run-off. The rain was beneficial for replenishing soil moisture, but cooler temperatures have delayed grass and forage growth. Small grain jointing progressed, but remains significantly behind normal progress. Corn planting was underway, but row crop field work was limited by wet conditions. Topsoil moisture conditions were rated mostly adequate, and six percent was rated surplus. Subsoil moisture conditions were still rated mostly short to very short, but had improved. Thirty-three percent of the state was rated as very short, down from 45 percent the previous week. There were only 3.6 days suitable for fieldwork, due to several days of rainfall. Small Grains: Condition ratings for all wheat, rye and oats continued to be rated mostly good to fair. Freeze damage from the freeze two weeks ago was reported in a few counties, but the extent of the damage remains to be seen. Wheat jointing was 59 percent complete by Sunday, 20 points behind the five-year average and 32 points behind this time last year. Rye jointing was 69 percent complete, 20 points behind normal progress. Oat planting continued with spring oats and was 92 percent complete by the end of the week. Sixteen percent of oats were jointing, 14 points behind the five-year average. Canola was rated mostly good to fair, with 43 percent rated poor to very poor. Twenty percent of canola was reported as blooming by the end of the week, compared with 97 percent this week last year. Row Crops: Fieldwork was limited in areas of heavy rainfall. Corn seedbed preparation was 76 percent complete by the end of the week, and 16 percent of corn was planted, compared to 31 percent last year and a 20 percent five-year average. Sorghum seedbed preparation was 36 percent complete, and soybean seedbed preparation was 25 percent complete by week’s end. Peanut seedbed preparation was 23 percent complete, and cotton seedbed preparation was 42 percent complete, both significantly behind normal. Pasture and Livestock: Conditions of pasture and range improved a little, but continued to be rated mostly poor to very poor. Cooler temperatures limited forage development, but the improved soil moisture will be beneficial. Run-off for stock ponds and creeks was received in many areas of the state. Livestock conditions continued to be rated mostly good to fair.
