Water Wise Landscaping Workshop: The Oklahoma City Utilities Department has partnered with Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension and the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture to promote conservation through proper outdoor watering and drought-tolerant landscaping. A free, informative workshop will take place TOMORROW, July 13, 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Children’s Garden at the Myriad Botanical Gardens in Oklahoma City. Experts from the OSU Cooperative Extension team will provide information on different techniques from irrigation to proper plant selection, followed by a walking tour through the gardens to show how these principles can be applied to create a beautiful, water-wise landscape. Water Conservation Workshop: Did you know you can have beautiful landscaping while using a lot less water? Experts from Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension will show you how July 20 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the OSU/OKC Campus’ Agriculture Resource Center, room 196, 400 N. Portland. Topics include proper irrigation for maintaining a healthy landscape and appropriate plant selections for Oklahoma City. Participants will learn about resources available for homeowners and see an outdoor water irrigation audit demonstration. The workshop is free and participants are encouraged to arrive early for coffee and donuts. The OSU experts also will conduct workshops at neighborhood association meetings upon request and availability. To reserve a seat at the workshop or schedule a workshop for your association, contact Malarie Gotcher at 297-3380 or malarie.gotcher@okc.gov. Food Safety Workshop Part 2: Those interested in taking advantage of crops that can be grown commercially, but do not require hundreds of acres, can register for the second of a two-part series sponsored by USDA’s Risk Management Agency and Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension. The Food Safety Workshop is the second of a two-part series and will include information on fertigation, pest management, Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs), record keeping, post-harvest handling, and more. Participants don’t need to have attended the first event to register for this one. The workshop is slated July 24 at the one acre garden site north of the gravel parking lot at Paradise Casino, 7500 Highway 177, in Red Rock, from 9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The event is hosted by the Otoe-Missouria and Ponca tribes. There is no cost to attend, but participants are asked to pre-register to ensure adequate meal preparation for the complimentary lunch, by contacting Jensen at 405-744-9826 or jennifer.jensen@okstate.edu. Women in Ag Conference Slated: The Oklahoma statewide Women in Agriculture and Small Business Conference will take place Aug. 8-9 at the Moore Norman Technology Center, 13301 S. Penn Ave., in Oklahoma City. Early registration is due by Aug. 1 and is $50 per person. Registration after Aug. 1 is $60. Registration forms are available online here. Secretary of Ag Jim Reese will be on hand to welcome everyone to the conference.
