Smith, Emmy Award-winning author, humorist, auctioneer and rancher, emphasized ATTITUDE during his presentation “Laughter is Lawful,” which he gave before an audience of city personnel on October 8 at the Fire Administration Building in Edmond. Sheriff Smith conducted All-Employee Training sessions during the months of October and November. He used homespun cowboy humor and anecdotes from his 36 years in law enforcement as the sheriff of Smith County, Texas to convey the major points of his presentation. He retired as sheriff last December. “I’m a little bit of a smart aleck,” Sheriff Smith admitted. Some of the gems he imparted to the audience included: “My wild oats have turned into shredded wheat.” “Don’t start a fire without your clothes on.” cont pg 2 “I have been married so many times that wedding bells sound like alarm clocks.” “There are two ways to argue with a woman - neither of them work.” “Never take laxatives and sleeping pills on the same night.” He also managed one of the largest jails in Texas, housing over 1,000 prisoners with a department of over 355 personnel and an annual budget of over $27 million. “Jailhouses are negative places and the dumping ground for mental problems. There isn’t nothing that I haven’t experienced in a jail cell. Someone is trying to kill you every day,” he said. He showed weapons and other items (below) that the prisoners had made using simple materials like a toothbrush to make a crude knife.
