CURRENT EVENTS Spotted Wing Drosophila Workshop: A workshop to prepare Oklahoma stakeholders for spotted wing drosophila and to organize a state wide monitoring program is slated May 1 at the Oklahoma County OSU Cooperative Extension office, and May 2 at the Tulsa County OSU Extension office. Both workshops will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This program is intended to educate fruit growers and Extension Educators about the threat of spotted wing drosophila to the Oklahoma grape and berry industries. Environmental Law Enforcement Training: OCES, along with the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are joining forces to host Environmental Law Enforcement Trainings around the state. The next training is slated April 25 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will take place at the courthouse in Pryor. Michael Freeman, senior criminal investigator with the ODEQ, will speak about agency jurisdictions and environmental crime statutes, and give an overview of illegal dumping and environmental crime awareness. Lynn Malley, OCES assistant state specialist, solid waste management programs, will present about Extension and the roles that citizens can take in helping to control illegal dumping. The training is free and lunch is $10 if registered by April 21. Registration may be done online on the OSU Solid Waste Management Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/OkstateSolidWasteManagement or the website at www.agecon.okstate.edu/waste. For additional information please contact Malley at lynn.malley@okstate.edu. ANNOUNCEMENTS Pomp and Circumstance: Members of Class XVI of the Oklahoma Agricultural Leadership Program graduated April 5. Since August 2012, they have traveled all over Oklahoma, spent two days in Kansas, two days in Pennsylvania, one week in Washington, D.C., and nearly two weeks in South Africa learning about leadership, economics, marketing, perspective, tolerance, and people. They also have performed community service in the various places they have visited and made a difference in the lives of others. They are great advocates for agriculture! Applications for OALP’s Class XVII are available online at http://oalp.okstate.edu. The deadline for submitting an application and letters of reference is May 1.
