The bus visited 117 locations over four months to obtain public input from citizens throughout the metropolitan area about long-term transit development. The FAST Forward Mobile Outreach Bus generated extensive media coverage along the way, and people were urged to participate online at fastforwardplan.org if they could not visit the bus in person. More than 1,500 people submitted surveys, with 88 percent of them saying they had never previously participated in a transportation planning event prior to getting on the bus. This Public Outreach award recognizes a program that helps create greater awareness among citizens about the benefits of good planning. “This aging city bus was transformed into a comfortable platform where citizens could voice their opinions in their own communities,” said Marie L. York, FAICP, APA Board Director and 2012 Awards Jury Co-Chair. “It was an innovative way to engage citizens in transportation planning discussions and eliminate barriers between local government and citizens.” The National Planning Award for Public Outreach will be presented at a special awards luncheon held during APA’s National Planning Conference in Los Angeles on April 16, 2012. The FAST Forward Mobile Outreach Bus will also be featured in an upcoming issue of Planning magazine, APA’s flagship publication.
