CURRENT EVENTS
Brown Bag Lunch Series Kicks Off April 12: David Hillock, OSU Cooperative Extension
Consumer Horticulturist, will kick off the Brown Bag Lunch Series Thursday, April 12, with his
presentation, “Designing with Annuals, using the Tall Grass Prairie Concept.” The event will take
place in the Educational Building at The Botanic Garden at OSU from 12:10 p.m. to 12:50 p.m.
The Brown Bag Lunch Series is a 50-minute educational program presented during the lunch
hour with topics on gardening, irrigation, water harvesting, and herbs. Members of the botanic
garden may attend at no cost. Non-members may attend for $5.
Purple Up for Military Kids: While most people associate the color green with the Oklahoma 4-
H program, the color purple will be the focus Friday, April 13. April marks the nation’s “Month of
the Military Child,” and April 13 has been designated as “Purple Up! For Military Kids” day. This is
a great time for all extension programs and departments to honor youth in Oklahoma who are
impacted by military deployment.
OMK (Operation: Military Kids), which was initiated in 2005, is part of the Oklahoma 4-H
Youth Development Program. OMK is joining forces with all other Operation: Military Kids
programs across the country to raise awareness and show support for these children and their
families and let them know how much we appreciate the sacrifices they make when their family
members are deployed.
Groups, organizations and individuals all across Oklahoma are encouraged to wear purple as
a visible way to support and thank military families. A sea of purple in every Oklahoma
community would provide a wonderful visual for the thousands of military families. Purple is the
color that symbolizes all branches of the military and combines Army green, Coast Guard blue,
Air Force blue, Marine red and Navy blue.
Community organizations, including 4-H clubs, can host events in their communities that
focus on military youth. Please email photos and a short story of your “Purple Up” activities to
Carol Vandiver at carol.vandiver@okstate.edu.
Plant Sale Slated April 14: The Annual OSU Plant Sale will take place Saturday, April 14
at the OSU Teaching Greenhouses from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., or until sold out. Six-inch
containers of geraniums, asclepias, enchinacea, euphorbia, gaillardia, rubbeckia, sedum,
heuchera, basil, oregano, rosemary, salvia, and verbena will be available for $5. Beautiful
petunia hanging baskets in various colors are $15. Tomatoes and peppers also will be available
in 2.5-inch containers for $1, along with ornamental grasses in 1-gallon containers for $10. Two-gallon
patio tomato plants may be purchased for $15.
Public Issues Leadership Development (PILD): Individuals making the trip to Washington,
D.C., to participate in the upcoming PILD Conference, April 14-18, are Cindy Conner, Tracy
Lane, Susan Routh, and Mike Weber. They were on campus yesterday for their orientation
session with administration in preparation for their trip and “Day on the Hill” as they make visits
to the Oklahoma Congressional delegation
