Refl ections on OPQI Past, Present, and Future By Barbara O’Brien The Past As a college undergraduate student in the early 1950s at Stanford University, Warren Crosby was required to register for his upcoming courses at the registrar’s offi ce. Like many young adults, he had no idea what courses to take or what he wanted to major in at college. As the young Warren Crosby, or “Mel” as he was called then, looked over the long lines of other students there to register, he noticed that the Pre- Med line was empty. Mel walked right up to the counter and declared his major as Pre-Med, and the rest is history. Dr. Crosby liked to tell that story, but he also felt compelled to add that he was interested in every course in school, was always eager to learn, loved to teach others, and continued to enjoy every minute of his medical career—I’m sure to the very end.
