Stop Using Multi-Vaccine Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) The Multi-Vaccine Vaccine Information Statement, “Your Baby's First Vaccines” has been temporarily removed from circulation while it is being updated. This VIS has been an alternative when two or more routine childhood vaccines (i.e., DTaP, HepB, Hib, PCV13, polio, or rotavirus) are administered at the same visit rather than using separate VISs for each vaccine. In the meantime, please use the individual VISs when vaccinating children with these vaccines. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) hopes to have an updated edition available by mid-2014. New Vaccine Information Statements The Hib and Td Vaccine Information Statements (VISs) have recently been updated and are now available. Both VISs have an edition date of 2/4/2014. Neither VIS has changed substantively from previous versions, other than to include an addition ("Problems that could happen after any vaccine") to the adverse events section of each. However, because of this change, providers should begin using these new editions immediately. The new Td VIS replaces the Tdap/Td VIS, dated 1/24/12, which has been used for Td vaccine up until now. Any remaining copies of the Tdap/Td VIS should be discarded. Current VISs are available on the CDC website at: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/hcp/vis/index.html and in multiple languages at the Immunization Action Coalition (IAC) website at: http://www.immunize.org/vis/. Alternatives to Paper Copies of the Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) In the past, healthcare providers and public health entities interpreted federal law as requiring that a paper copy of each VIS had to be handed to the recipient prior to vaccination, and that the recipient must take this copy away with him or her following the vaccination so they will have information on side effects and how to report them. This is based on federal law which requires all health care providers in the United States who administer, to any child or adult, any of the following vaccines – DTaP, Td, Tdap, MMR, polio, HepA, HepB, Hib, influenza, PCV, meningococcal, rotavirus, HPV, or chickenpox – to provide, prior to administration of each dose of the vaccine, a copy to keep of the relevant current edition vaccine information materials that have been produced by CDC. The evolution of electronic media has resulted in broadening of this interpretation. CDC now states: · A practice may produce permanent, laminated, office copies of each VIS, which may be read by recipients prior to vaccination. · VISs may be reviewed on a computer monitor (or any video display). · VISs may be downloaded by the recipient to a smartphone or other electronic device to read at his or her convenience. (VISs have been formatted for this purpose and are available at the CDC website on the page for each VIS as an RTF (text) file which can be imported into an electronic system.) · VISs may be made available to be read before the immunization visit (e.g., by giving the patient or parent a copy to take home during a prior visit, or telling them how to download or view a copy from the Internet). These patients must still be offered a copy in one of the formats described previously to read during the immunization visit, as a reminder. · Providers must still offer a copy (which can be an electronic copy) of each appropriate VIS to take away following the vaccination. However, the recipient may decline. Adapted from: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/hcp/vis/about/facts-vis.html and http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/hcp/vis/about/required-use-instructions. html.
