All or any portion may be reproduced and shared. Return Service Requested Older adults are a vital part of our society. Since 1963, communities across the country have shown their gratitude by celebrating Older Americans Month each May. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Get into the Act,” to focus on how older adults are taking charge of their health, getting engaged in their communities, and making a positive impact in the lives of others. The theme also reflects on the 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Older Americans Act into law in July 1965. Since that time, the Act has provided a nationwide aging services network and funding that helps older adults live with dignity in the communities of their choice for as long as possible. These services include home-delivered and congregate meals, caregiver support, community-based assistance, pre-ventive health services, elder abuse prevention, and much more. By promoting and engaging in activity, wellness, and inclusivity, more Americans than ever before can “Get into the Act.” While COEDD Area Agency on Aging provides services to older adults year-round, Older Americans Month offers an opportunity to emphasize how older adults can access the home- and community-based services they need to live independ-ently in their communities. It is also an occasion to highlight how older adults are engaging with and making a difference in those communities. OBN purchased the lock-boxes using Federal Grant money set aside for states to address the prescription drug abuse and fraud epidemic across the country. OBN is partner-ing with the Department of Human Services’ Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) program to make the boxes available to elderly Oklahomans. OBN Spokesman Mark Wood-ward says the elderly population was selected to receive the boxes because they are a uniquely “at-risk” population. “Many elderly Oklahomans are on fixed incomes and unable to afford to buy a lock-box on their own. They frequently have small children and teens living in or visiting their home. Plus, the elderly often have controlled prescription drugs in the home that can be targeted by relatives or friends with a drug addiction.” ---Mark Woodward, OBN Spokesman OBN says it is critical for all Oklahomans to safeguard their home medication. According to Woodward, 80% of all drug-related overdose deaths in Oklahoma are linked to prescription drugs. Often, these drugs are stolen from home medicine cabinets of a friend or relative. Over the next several months, the Area Agencies on Aging will distribute the lock-boxes to elderly residents living in eleven AAA regions throughout the state. The lock-box giveaway kickoff event for the COEDD AAA service area will be held on Wednesday, June 24 at 10:30am at the Project HEART Nutrition Site, 401 North Bell, Shawnee, OK 74801.
