Volume 38, Number 10 Weekly Summary for Apr 20 - Apr 26 Issued April 27, 2015 Drought conditions continued to improve slightly last week. The percentage of the state rated extreme to exceptional was 8 percent, down 3 points from the previous week. Areas of the state not experiencing drought reached 25 percent, up 2 points from the previous week and up 18 points from the previous year. The West and South Central districts recorded up to 1.18 and 1.80 inches of rainfall, respectively, with some localized totals reaching above 2 inches. The remaining seven districts averaged precipitation levels less than an inch. Overall, temperatures remained in the low 60's across the state, with Freedom recording the lowest at 34 degrees on Monday, April 20th and Altus recording the highest at 87 degrees on Sunday, April 25th. Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions were rated mostly adequate to short. There were 4.0 days suitable for fieldwork. Small Grains: Winter wheat progress continued to suffer in the Panhandle due to limited moisture and drought conditions. Winter wheat jointing reached 97 percent by Sunday, up 8 points from the previous year and up 3 points from normal. Winter wheat headed jumped to 74 percent, up 21 points from normal. Eighty-seven percent of oats had emerged by Sunday, up 13 points from the previous year. Oats jointing reached 40 percent, up 10 points from the previous year. Canola blooming reached 92 percent, up 6 points from the previous year. Rye jointing reached 94 percent, up 4 points from normal. Row Crops: Corn seedbed preparation reached 87 percent by week’s end, down 2 points from the previous year. Sorghum seedbed preparation was 67 percent complete, down 4 points from the previous year and up 4 points from normal. Soybean seedbed preparation reached 42 percent complete, 8 points behind normal. Seedbed preparation of cotton was 86 percent complete by the end of the week, up 7 points from the previous year and up 13 points from normal. Peanut seedbed preparation reached 75 complete, up 8 points from normal. Peanuts planted reached 4 percent, down 1 point from normal. Pasture and Livestock: Conditions of pasture and range were rated at 76 percent fair to good. Livestock conditions were rated 86 percent good to fair. Livestock markets continued to hold strong.
