AN OPPORTUNITY FOR
HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS
AND SENIORS TO:
• do advanced work and receive college credit at OU
• investigate new areas of academic interest
• explore professional and career possibilities
What is it?
The Concurrent Enrollment Program at the University of Oklahoma is a program designed to allow high school juniors and seniors with exceptional abilities to enroll in college courses on a limited basis.
What are the benefits?
The Concurrent Enrollment Program permits you to accumu-late college credits prior to completing high school. It may allow you to pursue interests that you have developed in high school in a more concentrated or advanced manner, or to pursue new interests not available at your high school.
What kinds of courses can I take?
If you are admitted to the University of Oklahoma as part of the Concurrent Enrollment Program, you will be advised and permitted to enroll in regularly offered courses, as long as you meet the prerequisites, if any, and have satisfied the high school curricular requirements in the subject areas.
You may wish to take advanced coursework in areas you have already begun to study, such as mathematics, science, etc. Or, you may choose to examine entirely new fields to which you are attracted, such as art history, engineering or Asian studies, at the introductory level. Most importantly, the program can help you in planning a future career or profession by allowing you to explore alternatives early in your academic life.
Regardless of the area you choose, or the reasons which motivate you, the resources of the University of Oklahoma are available to you in pursuing this new and exciting educational opportunity.
Is there any limit to the enrollment?
The combined total of your enrollment at your high school and at the University of Oklahoma may not exceed 19 semester hours without special permission. For this purpose, the University will assume that any high school course enrollment is the equivalent of 3 semester hours. As an example, if you will be enrolled in two high school courses in your last high school semester, you could enroll in up to 13 semester hours of coursework at the University. You may enroll in a maximum of 9 semester hours during a summer session without being concurrently enrolled in high school classes during the summer term. If you wish to exceed the enrollment maximums, contact the Dean of University College at (405) 325-3521.
How do these credits count?
OU courses completed under the Concurrent Enrollment
Program will count as regular college credits earned at the
University of Oklahoma.
Do I get a grade in these courses?
Yes. You will be enrolled, examined, and evaluated in the
same manner as any other student in the course.
Who is eligible for this program?
To be eligible for the Concurrent Enrollment Program, you must satisfy these criteria:
1.) You must have achieved junior or senior standing and be eligible to complete requirements for graduation from high school no later than the spring of your senior year, as attested by your high school principal.
2.) Seniors must have achieved an ACT composite score of 24 or an SAT composite score of 1090 and at least a 3.0 grade point average (on an unweighted 4.0 scale) or rank in the top 50% of your graduating class; or a high school grade point average of at least a 3.0 (on an unweighted 4.0 scale) and rank in the top 30% of your graduating class.
Juniors must achieve an ACT composite score of 25, or an SAT composite score of 1130, or a high school grade point average of 3.5 (on an unweighted 4.0 scale). ACT or SAT must be from a national test.
How much does it cost?
You will be charged the regular tuition rates established by the University.* The exact cost will depend upon the number of credit hours in which you enroll and the level of the courses. Students enrolled through the Concurrent Enrollment Program are not eligible for financial aid. Information on tuition rates can be found at http://www.ou.edu/bursar/.
*High school seniors who attend OU as Concurrent
Enrollment students are eligible for a tuition waiver for up to six credit hours per semester or summer session (excluding
Intersession courses and courses offered through the College of Continuing Education). A high school senior is defined as a student who has completed his or her junior year, but has not yet graduated from high school. There are no family income levels to qualify for this waiver. The waiver does not cover other mandatory fees (activity fees, facility fees, library fees, technology fees, etc.) or the cost of books.
What do I have to do if I am interested?
Discuss the Concurrent Enrollment Program with your high school principal. He or she must recommend you for enrollment. Then, submit to the Office of Admissions: 1) a completed Concurrent Enrollment Program Recommendation
Form signed by your principal, high school counselor and one of your parents; 2) a completed application for admission to the University; 3) a high school transcript; 4) your ACT or SAT scores; and 5) a non-refundable application processing fee. Applications must be received in the Office of Admissions no later than April 1 for a fall semester or a summer session; and November 1 for a spring semester.
If you have any questions the University can answer, call the OU Office of Prospective Student Services, (405) 325-2151. We will try to provide any additional information you need. We look forward to your inquiries and hope that you will decide that the Concurrent Enrollment Program is an opportunity you want to pursue.
The University of Oklahoma, with the approval of the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, may alter admissions requirements at any time, when it is in the best interest of the University and its students to do so.
