My great-grandmother was a Chickasaw Indian from old Pickens County, Indian
Territory in present day Carter County, Oklahoma. The Zorgers, my mother's German
family, settled during the Land Run in Lawton. The Trout family homestead was near
Pooleville on 360 acres in Indian Territory. The Trouts are formerly from Texas,
Georgia, and the Virginia Colony, in that order. The family split during the American
revolution, with the loyalists moving to New London, Ontario and the rebels staying in
My other grandmother was from an Irish family, the Millers, who came to Oklahoma
Territory in a covered wagon from Granbury, Texas. Her great-grandfather served with
Sam Houston in the Battle of San Jacinto to end the Texas Revolution with Mexico.
They were early colonists to Texas with Stephan Austin from Tennessee. We still have
the original land deed to the ranch in Milam County, Republic of Texas. Based on this
historical family heritage I wrote an essay in 7th grade at Smiley Wilson Junior High in
Lubbock and won a gold medal for the region. The essay contest was sponsored by the
Daughters of the Republic of Texas. That began my writing career. I have worked in oil
field related jobs and higher education as an adult.
